International Meeting Assistant
International Rivers www.internationalrivers.org supports communities around the world seeking to stop destructive dams and promote better methods of meeting needs for water, energy and protection from floods.
International Rivers is seeking a Special Event Intern for Rivers for Life 3: The Third International Meeting of Dam-Affected People and Their Allies (RFL3). The intern will work with the RFL3 organizing team to:
* Assist with managing and analyzing participant data using RegOnline Event Management software.
* Coordinate travel plans for participants, including booking flights and tracking itineraries.
* Track financial assistance information for meeting participants.
* Help coordinate online communications efforts from the Berkeley office during the meeting.
* Field questions from meeting participants and help with other duties as assigned.
Background on RFL3:
This meeting, which will be held in October 2010 in Temacapulín, Mexico, will bring together representatives from hundreds of organizations, dam-affected people, and experts from across the globe to share experiences and information, network, develop collective strategies and strengthen the international movement to protect rivers and human rights. Since the first and second international meetings, much has changed in the dam development and finance industries, and in the international and regional river networks. At this critical time of financial crisis, global warming, and the desperate need for new clean energy sources, this meeting will help the global river protection movement develop joint strategies to confront new challenges and leverage new opportunities.
Desired Qualifications:
* Close attention to detail, ability to process and organize complex information
* Excellent computer and data management skills
* Strong administrative skills, research and writing ability
* Experience working in a team in a busy, nonprofit setting
* Professionalism and strong communication skills
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, particularly Excel and Word
* Experience with FileMaker Pro or other database programs a plus
* Motivated, reliable, and flexible
* Fluency in Spanish highly recommended, but not required
Time Frame:
This internship will be offered August through October 2010, and will be approximately 10-20 hours/week. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to communicate with activists and experts, and be an integral part of a dynamic non-profit office environment in downtown Berkeley. This internship is offered on a volunteer basis. Course credit is available.

Communications Intern
International Rivers is a non-profit advocacy and analysis organization headquartered in Berkeley, California, and with staff and consultants working in the Brazil, China, Laos, Thailand, Cameroon, and other parts of the US. International Rivers supports communities around the world in protecting their rivers and rights. We work to halt destructive dams and encourage better methods of meeting needs for water, energy and protection from floods.
We are currently seeking a Communications Intern that is passionate about international human rights and environmental issues, possesses solid writing and editing skills, and is web savvy and knowledgeable about online social networking tools and media sources. The Intern's primary project will be to maintain and archive the online media mentions of International Rivers' campaigns and campaigners. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to communicate with International Rivers' global staff, contribute to print and web publications, and be an integral part of a dynamic Berkeley non-profit office environment.
Specific responsibilities include:
* Maintaining and improving the online Media Mentions archive of media hits;
* Assist the editor of the World Rivers Review (International Rivers' quarterly newsletter) with writing and editing news briefs; and
* Updating our Flickr pages and other social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Wikipedia.
Required qualifications and experience:
* Strong writing, editing and communications skills
* Familiarity with social networking sites, their uses, capabilities, and potential
* Strong news research experience
* Ability to multitask, stay organized, and keep deadlines
* Excellent computer skills and attention to detail
International Rivers offers a stimulating, casual and flexible work environment. The Communication Intern's work schedule requires an average of 20 hours per week for 6 months. This internship is unpaid but course credit is available.
