We are happy to welcome the new coordinator of International Rivers'
policy program and successor of Shannon Lawrence, Zachary Hurwitz.
Zach has a Masters in Geography and the Environment from the University of
Texas in Austin, where he studied Brazilian development in the Amazon as
coupled with World Bank policy frameworks, and their effects on dam
planning and livelihoods on the Madeira River. He also examined Brazil's
adherence to the Clean Development Mechanism and projects in the voluntary
carbon market.
In the past Zach has worked for and been a consultant to Global Exchange,
Amazon Watch and Rainforest Action Network, among other organizations. He
has also been a very effective consultant to International Rivers' Amazon
program since June 2010. Through his studies and his assignment with
International Rivers, he has acquainted himself with new dam builders and
financiers such as Brazil's BNDES. If you did not have the chance to meet
Zach at the Rivers for Life conference in Mexico last month, you will soon
get to know him as a quick mind and great campaigner.
Zach will continue to work as a consultant for our Amazon and policy
programs through the end of the year, and will join our staff in the
Berkeley office in January 2011. His e-mail address is
zachary@internationalrivers.org. We look forward to having him on board as
the new coordinator of our policy program.
